British Gas Services L8 Pay 2009 - Latest News
(29/12/08) The previous newsletter BG/14/08, informed you of the settlement reached for BG Energy members for an increase of 4.1% and also of the strings attached to a similar offer to BG Services.
UNISON has been in further discussions with Services management in an effort to resolve the concerns we had over how new starters from 1st January 2009 would be treated.
Members will recall that the main problem was that the increase would not apply to new starters until they had been assessed as being fully competent. Based on feedback from UNISON representatives it was clear that the treatment of new starters during their probationary period has been far from satisfactory and in too many cases managers were not placing staff on the correct spot salary for anything between 6 and 9 months or longer. This was why UNISON expressed such strong concerns about the strings attached to the offer.

OFGEM Consultation: Price Control Pension Principles - Update
(16/12/08) A message from Mike Jeram - UNISON National Secretary:
Further to my letter dated 10 September OFGEM has recently indicated that it sees no immediate case to amend the price control pension principles. In paragraph 5.40 of the latest consultation document on the next Electricity Distribution Price Control Review Policy Paper (ref 159/08), OFGEM states:
"In summary, respondents agreed that the key issues were identified and that our Pension Principles remain appropriate and generally work well. We think it is appropriate to carry out further work to reassure stakeholders and customers that the companies are meeting the principles rather than looking to change the overall principles. In addition to these wider questions, the pensions consultation document raised a number of application issues."

British Gas Pay 2009
(15/12/08) As the end of 2008 approaches the prospects for pay levels in 2009 are already becoming clear. At the NJC for BG Energy held on 10th December the pay uplift for all Level 8 members in BG E was agreed at 4.1% with effect from 1st January 2009. This figure was based on the pay formula agreed with the trade unions.
Negotiations have also been underway to develop a new pay system for
Level 7 members in both BG S and BG E. Although the Level 7 settlement is
not due until 1st April 2009 it makes sense to get the new arrangements in
place well in advance of 1st April.
In BG E an agreement has been made operate a new system to be effective
from April 2009. The hope is that this will be much simpler to operate and
understand.
More news can be found in the bulletin and includes: further
details of the Level 8 pay increase (and important information for
staff in BGS); the new Level 7 pay
system and 'merit pot'; a farewell to Margaret Korzenwieski.

British Gas - Pay 2009 - Level 8
(09/12/08) Please find enclosed the latest bulletin regarding 2009's pay offer.
Your views are sought and are most welcome.
In summary, the Company has proposed a 4.1%
settlement for all existing BG Energy and BG Services staff.
However, in BG Services they have said they want to freeze the existing rate for new starters and that subject to them achieving an acceptable level of competence they would be brought up to the new minimum after 6 months.
UNISON has opposed the BG Services proposal to freeze the existing rate for new starters.
