Africa Appeal - Donate Knickers for Africa
Please see message below from Jan Tomlinson, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board UNISON Branch, following Wales TUC Women's Conference held last week. Hi Everyone. I have linked up with the Fire Brigade Union female member who spoke last week regarding a campaign called Knickers 4 Africa and has contacted me today. We were discussing Domestic Abuse Issues, and the FBU ladies told us that in Africa women who wear knickers are less likely to be sexually assaulted or raped.
However, due to excessive poverty many women and young girls are unable to afford knickers or bras. We can help by purchasing knicker packs and donate our used bras (in good condition) and as Women we can and will help reduce the risk of sexual assault or rape for our Sister's in Africa. Let me know if you want to help! Please promote this campaign. JanMembers may contact Claire Marsden - Women's Officer - for further information and to donate any unwanted knickers or brasClaire Marsden - claire@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk

Message from Ange - UNISON member
Hi Jan from beautiful warm sunny Uganda!
I am here to possibly set up the provision of our medications to the main hospital in Mbale Region. The maternal mortality rate is 1:20, in the UK it is 1:8200. This is not the worst country.. Sierra Leone has a rate of 1:7.
WOW! What a great idea! One of the big problems in SubSaharan Africa is domestic abuse/rape etc.. There are huge billboards springing up all over the countries I visit about this tragic subject. It is something positive, in that at least each woman will realise that she is not the only victim. Given that virginity is so prized in these countries, rape has an even more significant and long term effect than in the West.
Well done.. it gives the expression "Sisters" more of a meaning than just that within UNISON!
Best wishes to everyone,
Ange x
