edition 2

in brief:

Karl Whitehead
- branch secretary

With European health and Safety week approaching it seemed appropriate to dedicate this edition to just that - health and safety.

Health and Safety is a hot issue for many workplaces and few too many of us are aware of the dangers which could exist in our day to day working environment.

Thanks to the many health and safety stewards in UNISON (and not forgetting the members!) many accidents (and even deaths) are thankfully prevented.

Keep an eye out on events coming near you soon!

Also in this edition are details of your benefits. In particular, the UNISON Welfare scheme and the new UNISON Discount card.

Our welfare and wellbeing is important. During our lifetime there may be occasions where we may become ill or certain personal circumstances change and we may find it particularly difficult to cope with what we all may take for granted.

Sometimes you may only need someone to listen or a shoulder to cry on. At other times you may need to turn to family or friends for support (for those who may be so lucky). But how about your union? What can your union do or provide? That's where UNISON Welfare can assist.

UNISON Welfare is a registered charity designed to assist members when they are most at need. Although they are means tested, all UNISON members can apply.

And what is all the commotion about over this new UNISON discount card? The card provides a discount of at least 10% in many well known places - not just in the High Street but also local businesses: supporting your favourite salon, takeaway or florist.

Further details are included in this newsletter, so get yours before they all go!

This space could be better served to include something about you.

If you'd like us to include a topic you're interested in or would like some recognition for something you may be doing in your local community, please contact Irene Humphreys

about...

your health, safety and welfare -

your union = your voice

Health and Safety

Health and safety is a top priority for UNISON. Last year more than 1,000,000 injuries and 258 deaths were reported in workplaces across Britain. 24.3 million working days were lost and more than 27,000 people were forced to give up work due to injury. Since 1999 UNISON has won over £40,000,000 in compensation for members involved in work related personal injury cases.

If you have a health and safety issue at work, get in touch with your workplace representative, health and safety rep, or your branch secretary (see the Contact List for details).

For more information and resources on health and safety, visit the health and safety pages of the Branch website.

UNISON Welfare (registered charity)

UNISON Welfare is a unique confidential service offering advice and support just for UNISON members and their families. UNISON members experience many pressures in their lives affecting both work and home.

Whether it is just a chat and a sympathetic ear, advice or more concrete help you are seeking, UNISON Welfare may be able to help.

· Listening and support · Financial assistance · Breaks and holidays · Debt advice · General advice - All these services come free with membership.

Financial assistance - Sometimes all it takes is a small change in circumstances to tip the balance and turn a manageable situation into an unmanageable one. An extended illness can lead to a drop in pay. There may be other circumstances, which are placing a strain on the household budget - a relationship breakdown or bereavement or problems at work. You may need help with equipment because of a disability or you might be caring for someone with special needs.

A grant cannot be made for credit card or other consumer debts and depending on your situation you may be referred to the debt advice service. However, they often help with household bills, white goods and special equipment or adaptations.

As a charity, help with a grant will depend on your financial circumstances. More than 2,000 grants are provided to members every year and many more receive confidential advice and information.

Debt advice and support - Free, impartial and confidential debt advice service provided in partnership with Payplan who are experts in helping people in financial difficulty. The range of help includes:

· Free independent and impartial debt advice · A simple switch from your current fee charging debt management provider · Flexible Debt Management Plans · Five year fixed Individual Voluntary Arrangements (with no upfront fees)

Members will be pleased to know that the new UNISON discount card has finally arrived!

The card, which is the key to a wide range of offers, both locally and across the UK and Southern Ireland. The benefits are focused primarily on offers and discounts on retail products and services, for example restaurants, clothing, leisure activities, beauty salons, gyms and much, much more. There's a wide range of offers with major retailers and providers, but there's also a rapidly growing network of thousands of independent retailers offering deals, usually a minimum of 10% and all those local companies will give you the discount just for showing your benefits card.

Discounts are available with instantly recognisable high street names and local retailers: Boots, M&S, Thornton's, Halfords, Comet...

But perhaps you'd like to enjoy discounts at that nice new restaurant around the corner but they are not listed on the scheme? Simply call the helpline and they'll do their best to bring them on board - what ever it may be, the discount card will save you money.

To ensure you don't miss out, please contact your steward.

Cards must be registered before first time use.
