edition 1

in brief:

Karl Whitehead
- branch secretary

Welcome to 'the flame'- the branch newsletter gets a new makeover!

We're dedicating this edition to equality - because we recognise that equality is an inseparable part of all trade union issues and is one of the four key priorities within UNISON.

The aim of our newsletters are to keep you informed of our activities, initiatives and most importantly, an opportunity to discuss issues that matter to you.

What ever it may be, if you'd like us to include a topic you're interested in (doesn't have to be work related) or would like some recognition for something you may be doing in your local community, please tell us!

a little bit
about...

your equality
groups -

your union = your voice

UNISON is committed to achieving equality: in our workplaces, in our union branches, and throughout UNISON's structures. Equality is also a high priority in our negotiating and campaigning work. It is one of UNISON's founding principles. For example, UNISON has been at the forefront of campaigns for equal pay, for rights at work for same sex partners and for proper protection for disabled workers. Tackling racism remains a key priority. UNISON is committed to ensuring that all our members are able to be involved in the union and have their voices heard.

Part of UNISON's approach to achieving equality is the organisation of groups of members who may themselves face prejudice and discrimination. UNISON has four self-organised groups - for women members, black members, disabled members and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members. Self-organised groups work in partnership with other parts of the union to identify and promote our equality agenda.

Your branch has 4 Self-Organised Group Officers and they would each like to set up a network of members to organise in equality matters. Please get in contact for further information:

Women Members: Claire Marsden (claire@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk)
Black Members:
Kevin Thomas (kevin@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk)
LGBT Members: Simon Woods (simon@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk)
Disabled Members: Irene Humphreys (irene@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk)

Young members - for the under 27's

UNISON wants young members to play a full part in union activities and knows that young members need supporting in a variety of ways - for many young people it can be difficult in being taken seriously or speaking out with confidence in a room full of older people who can give the impression they know it all. That's why we have created a young members organisation in UNISON which is designed to:

* encourage recruitment and participation by young members * provide a voice for young members * give young members the chance to develop their skills and knowledge * support young members in becoming active in the wider union

We are developing a range of information, advice, support, training, and networking opportunities. Your Young Members Officer is Helen Martyn. Please get in contact if you'd like to join the network for all our young members! helenm@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk

Kevin Thomas UNISON Black Members Officer

A little gossip about Kevin..?

What was the last CD/DVD bought? The final season of The Sopranos. Worth every penny!

The last concert/gig you went? The last gig was to see Lauren Hill at Wembley Arena about 10 to 12 years ago (for shame).

Favourite drink? I'm pretty much tea total but I do enjoy an occasional Bud Ice.

Favourite food? Anything home cooked by Mum (also partial to a Big Mac- but don't tell Mum! (comment from the Editor: How much is it worth not to tell Mum?)

Do you have any pets? No pets but I did keep a terrapin once in a metal Quality Street tin. Unfortunately, it died of some form of rust poisoning from the water.

What has been your best holiday? I've enjoyed all my holidays, especially the one's where I haven't been asked to leave the hotel. I went to Fuerteventura in May and would recommend going to everyone.

A little about Kevin's role as Black Members Officer...

Kevin plays a key role in equality in the workplace and in the community, challenging racism where ever found and will be at the forefront of organising support at local, regional and national levels.

He will soon be starting a self-organised group, if you're interested in becoming part of this exciting programme please let him know, his email address is kevin@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk - or use the following link to find out more information: www.unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk/equality.htm

do your bit...

1. switch all computer equipment and appliances off when not in use, for example at lunchtime. Modern appliances still use energy if left on standby. They are designed to cope with being turned on and off frequently.

2. take the stairs not the lift - it is often quicker, and you'll get fit top. Climbing 6 flights of stairs a day could result in a weight loss of nearly 18lbs a year!

3. Recycling is great, but reducing waste and re-using is even better. Print on both sides of paper, re-use envelopes, and think about ways of reducing other waste that is generated in your workplace. Landfill waste creates greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

4. If there are barriers, talk to your workmates and your union about working out solutions. Over half the UK's energy is directly used in the workplace. Acting collectively, you can be part of the solution.

Although we don't expect this to resolve the situation with our economy, we do hope that it will at least provide some relief to our members during the credit squeeze.
