British Gas Staff News

  • No Basis for Scaremongering

No Basis For Scaremongering

A message from Steve Bloomfield - UNISON National Officer for Gas staff.

I am extremely concerned about the stories of alleged job losses within British Gas that have been circulating internally and via the media in recent days. After making enquiries with the company I have been told that there is absolutely no truth in the allegations.

It remains a mystery what lies behind these allegations and I feel confident that as the trade unions side secretary of both BG Energy and BG Services for L7 and L8 staff I would be one of the first to be told if such plans existed. At no stage has any evidence been disclosed to me to support the allegations and I can only assume that there are other reasons why such misleading statements have been made.

I feel very sympathetic about those UNISON members who have been upset and worried by these unfounded rumours and it grieves me to hear of members in tears worrying about their job. I can only assure all members that UNISON will always communicate to its members honestly and frankly about all issues that affect them at work. We will never scaremonger as that is not the way we work unless there is a good reason to do so.

UNISON will continue to work hard in the best interests of its members throughout the BG Group and we will work with the company to ensure that members can look forward with some certainty that they have a future working for this company. Indeed in many respects there are some exciting new developments that should lead to the creation of new opportunities for UNISON's members in British Gas. UNISON will be doing all it can to make sure that UNISON members remain in the forefront of the company's mind when it plans for the future.
