British Gas Staff News

Dear Member,

There's some news we'd like to tell all members employed in Centrica/British Gas. Please take a moment to read through today's headlines:-

  • British Gas Decides to Base the New Smart Metering Business in Leeds

Don't forget to let us know your views!

British Gas Decides to Base the New Smart Metering Business in Leeds

At the Energy NJC on 9th December the company confirmed its decision to base the new smart metering business in Leeds. The existing Services Centre in Leeds will be converted to accommodate the new business.

While this is good news for Leeds as it secures a long term future for the site this development will also raise many concerns for the existing Services staff.

The company has said that it wants to achieve the transition from Services to Energy in a way that avoids any compulsory redundancies. However the existing staff do face many challenges in either re-skilling to carry out the new smart metering role or alternatively moving over to the Energy Services Centre. UNISON will be working hard with members at Leeds to ensure that their best interests are kept in the forefront of the company's mind. We will also need to understand what impact this development will have on the remaining Services Centres' elsewhere in the country.

It seems clear that BG are determined to make the most of the opportunities offered up by Smart Metering and if all goes well the future of the Leeds site looks rosy.

Members will be kept informed of developments as they take place over the next year or so.
