One British Gas Redundancy Consultations

On Wednesday, 9th September UNISON representatives attended the first of a series of consultation meetings about the proposed changes within One British Gas and were formally notified of those staff at risk of redundancy in Cardiff : with the total number of potential redundancies being, 29 posts across Level 7 & Level 8 in British Gas Trading and 1 post at Level 7 in British Gas Services. The Business is currently in consultation with us and are committed in securing alternative roles for people to minimise the potential redundancies. These have been identified as follows:

British Gas Trading Limited:

Level 8 - 15 proposed redundancies (8 in Management Development Team; 1 in Finance & MI; 3 in PE People Team; 3 in Energy Sales)
Level 7 - 9 proposed redundancies (2 in Management Development Team; 1 in Finance & MI; 5 in Energy Sales; 1 in Marketing)
Level 6 - 3 proposed redundancies (3 in Energy Sales)

British Gas Services Limited:

Level 7 - 1 proposed redundancy in Energy Sales
Level 6 - 1 proposed redundancy

A number of 'at risk' posts have also been identified for Level 5 & Level 6 staff and it is recommended for members to contact us for further information.

Reasons for the Proposed Changes

The Business has provided the following explanation:

"As outlined by Phil Bentley in his announcement on the 11th August 2009, British Gas is facing very competitive markets, pressures for price cuts, increasingly demanding customers and greater direct involvement from Government - all set against the backdrop of the UK recession and a growing trend of lower demand for energy.

Whilst British Gas has seen positive half year results, they do not reflect the challenging future we face. Within this context we have, like most UK companies, reviewed how we operate. We have to constantly look at our costs; one way to think about it is for every pound we spend it's another pound that our customers must pay.

At the time of creating One British Gas we knew that one of the benefits of coming back together would be to make us more efficient and reduce duplication. Back in March, we didn't want to rush at this, but rather take a considered view based on experience of the new organisation. However, we now know that we can run the business more effectively and have announced to affected teams based in Cardiff that we propose a reduction of 29 people, 27 of whom are in British Gas Trading."

Proposed Method of Selection

The Business has proposed a selection process based on:

* Performance records: taking into account performance ratings for 2007, 2008 and 2009
* Technical skills/competencies: critical technical/business skills and knowledge
* Behavioural skills/competencies: relationships/interpersonal skills and personal responsibility
* Other differentiating factors: performance trend and disciplinary record

Your UNISON representatives would like to consult members on the proposals taking into account the following:

The proposed method is to be delivered as a desktop exercise and completed by the staffs line manager. UNISON believes that affected staff should be given the maximum opportunity to have a direct input in the outcome of their own selection process and has delivered an initial alternative: to enable staff to complete and provide their own examples of how they meet the person specification/criteria. We enclose a copy of the proposed individual assessment form for level 7 & level 8 staff provided by the Business: click here [pdf document]

Further information is also available by visiting the website: click here

We ask staff to provide their views by sending responses to consultation@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk or by speaking with your UNISON steward.

Employees Above Salary Range

Nationally, discussions are underway following a Company proposal to deal with staff in British Gas Energy who are on a salary in excess of the range for their role.

It is proposed:

* staff £3000 or less above the salary range for their role will have their salary frozen until the range catches up.
* staff £3000 above the salary range will have 50% of the difference (between the actual salary and the range) removed at 24 months and another 50% removed at 30 months.

Please forward comments to consultation@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk or by speaking with your UNISON steward ideally no later than 21st September.

Level 8 Pay Review 2010

At present, the current pay review date for level 8 employees is 1st January. Whilst the agreement states we use October data, the data is never available in time, so July data is normally used (with agreement). All other employees pay review is on 1st April of each year. It is proposed to move all Level 8 employees in BGE to 1st April pay date. Should the pay review date occur on 1st April 2010, staff will receive a pay award covering 15 months. This will then enable the use of the October data.

Please forward your comments to consultation@unisoncymruwalesgas.org.uk or by speaking with your UNISON steward ideally no later than 21st September.
